met heather on the corner of clark and belmont after seeing the movie(apocalypse now redux review some other time) drove down the street to this little bar called shuba's where the bands were playing at. we decided to have some dinner at the restaurant next door. i ate a pesto/provalone/roasted tomato sandwich, which was rilly good, and drank a gin and tonic. after we ate, we sat outside and drank longislandicedtea.

heather's friend erin, who wrote for rolling stone, but got laid off on friday, met us at the table. she brought the guy who was the drummer for pete yorn with her. his name was luke. he was super nice, wasn't stuck up rockstrry and gave everyone free calling cards. not sure why. erin's friend brandon, who works for MTV, and also plays in a band, came by and sat with us too. at this point in time i realized there were 5 people sitting at a table and all five had blue eyes, and 3 of the 5 had nearly black hair. including me. i couldn't help but smile.

4 out the 5 worked in the music industry. one unemployed. no smiles for that.

so we want to order more drinks, since there is some debate about when the opening band is going to start, but the waiter is lame, and wouldn't serve us since we had been there for so long. we had been there about 2 hours. but it was okay, cause we found out that the band ours was starting.

hours. what can i say. i liked them enough, but like my friend ben says" theres nothing new under the sun." including ours. they are very pablohoney radioheadish, with some 80s synthpop thrown in. the lead singer though sounds uncannily like Thom Yorke. which i guess is cool but he should sound more like himself i think. they covered Boheimian Rhapsody, and i'm not really sure how i feel about that.

Ours had 5 members, but only 3 of them were really visible. they pretty much hid the keyboard/synth guy and the drummer in the dark. i dont know if this was intentional or not. but it is also interesting to note that the 3 visible members of the band( the guitarist, the vocalist-guitarist, and the bass player) all looked like they weighed maybe 110 pounds. they were super skinny, with stringy dyed hair, 2 black one blonde. but i admit that the guitarist, i think his name was jimmy, was superhot. the vocalist, had a snotty fake accent. the last song they played, misery, was their best.

so there was a break in playing and so we got more drinks. now i switched to whiskey sours, my favorites, and the bartender was cute so i flirted and he made them strong. at this point i was getting sort of drunk. we went outside so heather could talk to her "boys" as she likes to call them, and do her "i work for sony" thing. and i hung around just watching everyone, being kindof quiet, but just watching these people interact, i felt like an anthropoligist or something.

so i get tired of all the idle chitchat and rockstar posturing outside so i go backinside and get another whiskey sour and pete yorn is already playing inside. hes allright. the crowd loved him to death though. they were so into it and their joy is contagious, combined with alcohol, i think i liked hime more than i normally would. pete yorn is cute, with shaggy hairthat rminds me of syd barrett, he seems nice enough. his music sounds like the wallflowers, like that sort of american rockin but not too hard so its in the british sort of oasis rock way. he covered the smith's "panic" in this slow dirgy kinda way, which was pretty cool. and i realized when i heard him play this one song (turned out to be the single)that i had heard him before, i just didn't know it. best line in one of his songs "and i won't sleep better alone".

overall, i got pretty drunk, not enought to stumble around or anything, but enough that my thinking was getting all strange and i was becomming pretty extroverted. it was the kind of drunk where all you want is someone to make out with. i talked to so many people that night. i took a lot of pictures. i'll have to see how those turn out. i know in a lot of them i'm going to be giving the international rock handsign. cause when i drink, i like to rock, for some reason.

i got asked for a light by like 7 people. no one has a lighter in chicago i guess.

went back to heather's, her apartment is really nice. we stayed up for a little while talking about ourselves and our lives, and she laughed at me for being drunker than her. i thought it was pretty funny too, but i tend to be a much happier/more fun person while i'm drinking. at least it seems that way.

then we got tired, so we passed out together in heather's bed. i had some strange, strange dreams.
